General Information

The City of Burlington was established in 1888 and became a home rule community in the 1970s. With a six-person City Council, and elected mayor, the City of Burlington operates 11 departments. All departments are under the direction of the appointed city administrator.

City Council Information

The City Council is elected, and each council person is elected for the duration of a four-year term. The terms are staggered, and elections occur in April. The mayor is also elected for a four-year term and oversees the direction of the city administrator.

Each City Council person is representative to all areas of the city. City Council appoints members of the community to various boards and commissions focusing on specific areas of interest within the city.
